Starting off a new year, Iran’s Army chief has warned an American aircraft carrier not to return to the Persian Gulf. The warning took place shortly after Iran’s 10-day naval exercise.
“We recommend … to the American warship that passed through the Strait of Hormuz and went on to the Gulf of Oman, not to return to the Persian Gulf.” the official Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) quoted Iranian gen. Ataollah Salehi saying.
The U.S. keeps at least one aircraft carrier in the Gulf at all times; something that has been going on for decades to ensure the Strait of Hormuz is left open. Iran said it has no intention of shutting down the strait, thus their motives seem unclear at the moment. Although red flags have been risen over Iran’s latest test missile launches, designed to sink warships.
The Pentagon stated that it will continue operations in the Gulf despite the warnings. “The deployment of U.S. military assets in the Persian Gulf region will continue as it has for decades,” Commander Bill Speaks added, “”Our transits of the Strait of Hormuz continue to be in compliance with international law which guarantees our vessels the right of transit passage,”
This is one of many attempts by Iran to display their new found power to the world. If Iran does decide to take action, multiple countries could very well descend on them in yet another middle eastern war.
